Syne User Manual

MIDI

Syne supports MIDI input from external devices, as well as creating MIDI clips through our MIDI Editor.

As we only have access to an Akai MPK249 and a Prophet X, our ability to test support for new MIDI controllers is limited. If you would like to help us support your controller, please submit a feature request via the form in the top right!

MIDI Recording

MIDI can be recorded from the computer keyboard or a connected MIDI controller.

Currently only note values and velocities are recorded. When playing via the computer keyboard, all notes are recorded at full velocity.

Support for MIDI devices

In order for Syne's MIDI support to work, you need to use a browser that supports the Web MIDI API, and click "allow" in your browser’s permission popup.

The following major browsers have native support as of 2026:

  • Firefox v108+
  • Chrome v43+
  • Edge v79+
  • Opera v30+

Note that in 2020, Apple announced that they would not natively support the Web MIDI API (and a host of other APIs) in Safari because of fingerprinting concerns.
