Concepts
While syne.studio is similar to existing DAWs in many ways, there are some new concepts to understand due to its nature as a collaborative online tool.
Control scopes
There are three types of controls in the project editor:
- Project-level controls. These are settings that affect the audio output of a project for everyone. Changes to them are synchronized to collaborators, but are undoable only by you. Examples include gain, pan, tempo, effects, and clips.
- User-level settings. These are settings that affect your editing experience across all projects. They are synchronized between all your sessions, but apply only to you. There are no examples of these yet!
- Local controls. These are controls used ephemerally to help you work on a project. They are not synchronized and apply only to a single project. These settings will keep their value across browser sessions, but won't transfer to other devices. Examples include muting, soloing, metronome and looping settings.
In this manual we’ll specify which scope applies to each control.
Interactions
There are some standard interactions we’ll refer to which work the same way in multiple places. Often, these interactions will work differently on different devices.
Zooming
You zoom areas such as the arrange timeline or clip editor by:
- Touchscreen: pinching with two fingers
- Keyboard/mouse: Holding Ctrl and scrolling
Panning
Scrollable areas can be panned in addition to scrolling:
- Touchscreen: scrolling and panning work generally the same. You can also pan around while zooming with two fingers.
- Keyboard/mouse: Hold Shift while scrolling to scroll horizontally. You can also drag with the middle mouse button to scroll left and right, and zoom up and down. This makes for an efficient way to move around the project.
